Insurance company weighs sedation policy change

A proposed policy change by Aetna, Inc., that would stop covering the cost of using anesthesiologists during colonoscopies has been delayed, according to a February 27 Associated Press article. The insurance company delayed the policy change after a group of practitioners criticized the decision, saying anxious patients would be less likely to participate in cancer screenings, the wire service reported.

Now, Aetna says that it will implement the proposed policy change once the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves "attractive, patient-friendly alternatives to anesthesiologist-monitored sedation services," the insurance company told the Associated Press.
