From September 2007 through the April 2008 issues, the Briefings on Credentialing newsletter featured a series of Credentialing 101 articles. Each article focused on a single credentialing topic, and provided a refresher course for the seasoned pro and a just-the-facts introduction for the new MSP on the block. This week's tip is from the bylaws article, printed in the September 2007 issue:
The following is a list of questions hospitals should ask themselves when evaluating existing bylaws:
1. Does the document contain an article or section addressing practitioner rights?
2. Does the document contain inflammatory language?
3. Are sections of the document clear as they pertain to basic eligibility qualifications for medical staff membership?
4. Do the bylaws clearly indicate the effect loss of board status will have on existing medical staff appointees?
5. Do existing documents specify licensure status requirements?
6. Do existing bylaws define realistic staff categories?
7. Do your bylaws clearly state physicians' responsibility for assisting with emergencies in the hospital?
