On Monday, President Bush proposed a 2009 budget that provides $168 million for healthcare IT and electronic health records programs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which is a reduction in spending according to a February 11 Medical News Today article. The Proactive Disclosure Service (PDS) is one of the programs run by HHS that MSPs may use during the credentialing process, in addition to the department's online National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) and Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank (HIPDB).

"Christine Bechel, vice president of public policy for eHealth Initiative, said that the budget request seeks to reduce spending for health care IT because of the current fiscal and political situation, not because of a lack of interest in such programs," according to the article. However, congress remains dedicated to promoting healthcare IT, despite the proposed budget cuts, the article says.
