In accordance with standard MS.4.80, Joint Commission-accredited organizations must evaluate and document in the credentials file the practitioner's health status as it applies to the privileges requested.

This statement may include an applicant's statement that no health problems exist that could affect his or her practice, but your organization must confirm. For initial applicants, the director of the training program, the chief of services, or chief of staff at another hospital at which privileges are currently held can make this confirmation, as can a medical staff-approved, licensed physician.

If there is doubt about an applicant's ability to perform the privileges requested, your organization may require an evaluation by an external or internal source. The medical staff must have a process to identify and manage practitioner health matters. This process is for the purpose of rehabilitation and must be separate from the disciplinary action process.

This week's tip is from The 2008 Credentials Verification Desk Reference, by Kathy Matzka, CPMSM, CPCS, (HCPro, Inc.) available here.
