Credentialing & Privileging

Q: Who can serve as a peer reference for a physician assistant (PA), and how many references are needed?

Credentialing & Verification Update, January 30, 2008

A: The organization must follow its established credentialing policies in terms of how many references to obtain and who can provide those references. If accredited by The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO), the organization must adhere to MS.4.70 Peer Recommendations--gathering recommendations from peer(s) (defined by The Joint Commission as appropriate practitioners in the same professional discipline as the applicant who have personal knowledge of the applicant) at the time of initial application for privileges, and upon renewal of privileges when there is insufficient practitioner specific data available.

The Joint Commission is not prescriptive with regard to the number of peer recommendations you must obtain.

Note: Sally J. Pelletier, a consultant with The Greeley Company, fielded this reader question.
