The key when communicating with members of the medical staff, either through face-to-face conversations, applications, or policies, is to ensure that the terms being used are clearly understood.

Bylaws and policies, while legal documents, should be written in everyday English whenever possible. Think of The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) standards: How many times have you read and re-read a standard, asked someone else what they thought, and then submitted a formal standards clarification to The Joint Commission to get the real interpretation? Don't fall into that trap. Any communication that cannot be understood without a published clarification needs to be simplified.

This week's tip is from Medical Staff Law: A guide for Medical Staff Professionals and Physician Leaders, by Anne Roberts, CPMSM, CPCS, available here.
