The start of a new year is an ideal time for the medical staff office (MSO) to chart a course for the next 12 months. Have your fellow MSPs, credentials committee, medical staff leaders, and others who are involved in your organization's credentialing and privileging process write a list of goals for 2008.

You will be more likely to take the initiative on a project when the goals are in writing, and developing a new year's resolution is a great way for the MSO to exchange ideas and take a look at the big picture.

These are some of the resolutions you might want to consider:

  • Which continuing education programs will your staff participate in?
  • Are there major purchases you'd like to make (e.g., office furniture, computer upgrades, etc.)?
  • Should you hire new staff or enlist outside agencies for contract work?
  • Do you need to revise office policies or "house rules" about topics such as overtime work or meeting frequency?
