Assigning responsibility for compensating an outside proctor usually becomes a matter of practicality. If the organization is pushing to adopt the procedure, technology, or treatment in question, then the burden of compensating the external proctor should fall on the hospital. If, on the other hand, an individual medical staff physician is making the request, then the hospital may consider having him or her bear the responsibility for paying the proctor.

Another popular option is for the hospital and the physician(s) to share the burden. Regardless of the avenue selected, an organization should clearly define the protocol for compensating external proctors in advance, so that no questions arise at the time of clinical performance. Attention to these factors will enable the smooth integration of new procedures and technologies into the organization.
