The number of people enrolled in Medicare managed care plans increased by approximately 1.3 million individuals between 2006 and 2007, according to a November 19 article in Medical News Today.
Among the Medicare Advantage plan types, the greatest growth in membership (130%) was in the new regional preferred provider organization plans.
This increase does not necessarily mean that more practitioners will be treating Medicare patients. Practitioners can chose to opt out of Medicare payment plans, or practitioners can be sanctioned by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which bans them from participating in Medicare payment plans. MSPs usually verify a practitioner's Medicare reimbursement status at initial appointment and at reappointment.
