Last month, UMass Memorial Health Care in western Massachusetts demoted Michael Greene, its chief financial officer, to the position of vice president when it discovered that his bachelor's and master's degrees are phony. UMass Memorial's decision to keep Greene on as vice president rather than fire him has elicited heavy criticism from some top figures in the Massachusetts health care community, including the executive director of the state Board of Registration in Medicine, reports the Boston Globe.

While UMass Memorial trustees and executives feel that Greene's bogus degrees are "regrettable," they stick by their demotion, contending that he made "a youthful mistake" and ultimately "has been good for the institution."

Although Greene did not pose as a physician or come into contact with any patients, the incident has called further attention to the issue of falsified credentials in the health care industry.
