Million dollar Medicare scheme in Southern California

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, October 16, 2007

Four people involved in a million dollar Medicare fraud scheme were given sentences ranging from probation to two years in prison. According to the San Jose Mercury News the scheme involved the recruitment of elderly Vietnamese patients for unnecessary testing at bogus Milpitas clinic in Southern California.

The defendants are Ukrainian immigrants who owned diagnostic testing companies, and promised free medical check-ups to Vietnamese patients. The defendants then used patients' personal information to submit false claims to Medicare for testing and procedures that were not necessary according to the San Jose Mercury News.

"This was a big deal. It required a lot of planning. There were persistent violations of the law over time," said U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel.
