Those of you who have been attempting to project 2008 inpatient revenue based on the IPPS final rule (published in August) may need to rerun your projections. As discussed below, CMS has released a notice correcting a number of errors made in the IPPS final rule. Among other changes, the correction notice changes the fiscal year 2008 IPPS standardized amounts and inpatient outlier threshold. CMS has also published corrected fiscal year 2008 IPPS tables at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/AcuteInpatientPPS/WIFN/list.asp.
Another interesting development last week was CMS' announcement that it has awarded a contract to the American Health Information Management Association to begin assessing the impact of replacing ICD-9 with ICD-10. While CMS has not yet announced the timing for the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10, CMS noted in the press release that its "proactive approach should send a signal to hospitals and others stakeholders who use the ICD-9 coding [system] to begin making their own transition plans."
