Kaiser Permanente is confronting a high-profile, high-stakes overhaul of some of its auditing and compliance processes. The Oakland, CA-based company is the country's largest not-for-profit health plan, with nearly nine million members (six million in California alone). It also operates a network of 29 medical centers and related facilities. In July, the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) said it plans to fine Kaiser Permanente $3 million related to inadequate monitoring of the quality of patient care.
