Kaiser Permanente is confronting a high-profile, high-stakes overhaul of some of its auditing and compliance processes.
The Oakland, CA-based company is the country's largest not-for-profit health plan, with nearly nine million members (six million in California alone). It also operates a network of 29 medical centers and related facilities.
In July, the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) said it plans to fine Kaiser Permanente $3 million related to inadequate monitoring of the quality of patient care.
If Kaiser Permanente makes necessary improvements, the DMHC promised to reduce the fine by $1 million.
