Few principles in medicine are more sacred than keeping patient information private. The legal implications of that tradition became clear in April 2003 through the privacy provisions of the federal HIPAA.
Unfortunately, familiarity can breed contempt or, at least, complacency. Healthcare institutions may take HIPAA compliance requirements for granted because they have been on the books for more than four years.
"It's normal for any organization to have some slippage," says Norm Werner, FACHE, director of corporate compliance at Continuum Health Partners in New York City. That's why it's important to regularly review your facility's compliance with privacy requirements.
