Tip: Screening new employees

The OIG suggests that hospitals screen new employees who have to make decisions involving compliance with the law or hospital policies and procedures. This screening could include a thorough background investigation and a reference check. The employee application should specifically require the applicant to disclose any criminal conviction or exclusion action. Hospital policies should avoid hiring any individual who has been listed as debarred, excluded, or otherwise ineligible for participation in federal healthcare programs.
