The government filed a complaint against Christi Sulzback, the former Tenet general counsel, alleging that she violated the False Claims Act in 1997 and 1998 by falsely certifying that her company was in compliance with government requirements.
The government alleges that Sulzback knew that certain physician contracts at North Ridge Medical Center in Florida were out of compliance. The Start Statute forbids hospitals from billing Medicare for physician referrals by physicians financially linked with hospitals unless those relationships meet certain strict conditions.
Sulzback is held accountable even though the government and Tenet reached a $22.5 million settlement in 2004.
