Under a regulatory settlement agreement reached September 6, UnitedHealth will pay $12 million to 36 states and Washington, D.C. to settle accusations it underpaid and delayed payment on claims.
According to the Hartford Courant, the settlement follows a multi-state review that began in 2004. The settlement also includes an improvement plan. UnitedHealth could pay an additional $20 million in penalties to the current participants if it fails to meet the components of the improvement plan.
Connecticut, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, and New York led negotiations for the settlement. Click here to read the complete settlement. To read the Hartford Courant story, click here.
