New effective date for esophageal Doppler monitoring coverage policy
On September 6, CMS issued a transmittal which corrects the effective date of a previous transmittal related to a national coverage determination of "ultrasound diagnostic procedures." CMS established a new effective date of May 22 for coverage of esophageal doppler monitoring for cardiac output in ventilated patients in the intensive care unit, and in operative patients with a need for intra-operative fluid optimization.

Revision of Medicare clinical trial policy
On September 7, CMS issued a transmittal which clarifies and revises its coverage of routine costs in clinical trials.
