Rhode Island Quality Improvement Organization accurately documents costs

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, September 11, 2007

An OIG audit of six fiscal integrity areas for the Rhode Island Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) found adequate documentation to explain costs. The audit covered $3.7 million in costs from November 1, 2002 through October 31, 2005.

In each state, CMS contracts with QIOs, which were established to promote the effective, efficient, and economical delivery of Medicare healthcare services and the quality of those services. QIOs submit vouchers for federal reimbursement to CMS on a monthly basis. The vouchers and reimbursements include amounts for both direct and indirect costs.

Because the QIO provided adequate documentation, the OIG's report contained no recommendations.
