Update to the national correct coding initiative edits
On August 31, CMS released a transmittal announcing the release of version 13.3 of the national correct coding initiative (NCCI) edits. Although not clear from the transmittal, historically CMS implements the NCCI edits for hospital claims one quarter behind the implementation date for physician/supplier claims.
Consequently, even though version 13.3 will be effective October 1 for physician/supplier claims, presumably it will not be effective for hospital claims until January 1.
Effective date: October 1, 2007
Implementation date: October 1, 2007

Expanded coverage of diagnostic ultrasound
On August 28, CMS issued a transmittal revising the National Coverage Determination (NCD) for "ultrasound diagnostic procedures." Under the revised NCD, Medicare will cover esophageal doppler monitoring for cardiac output in ventilated patients in the intensive care unit, and in operative patients with a need for intra-operative fluid optimization.
Effective date: May 17, 2007
Implementation date: September 28, 2007
