Audit finds Florida therapist not in compliance

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, September 4, 2007

Of 100 sampled physical therapy claims from Florida, 96 did not meet Medicare's reimbursement requirements, according to an OIG audit.

The OIG reviewed a sample of claims from one Florida physical therapist and determined 494 of the 702 services contained in the 100 sampled claims did not meet one or more Medicare requirements because

  • the physical therapist inappropriately used his provider identification number to bill for services performed or supervised by someone else
  • the documentation for some therapy services did not meet Medicare requirements
  • some therapy services were miscoded
  • a plan of care did not meet Medicare requirements

The OIG recommended the therapist refund $411,781 to Medicare and develop quality control procedure to ensure compliance.
