Facilities should have a plan in place for working with the media before a major event occurs. Have materials ready ahead of time and designate a point person. Your facility should have a package of positive information and a history of your facility ready to go, in case bad publicity should strike. Establish media contacts ahead of time. That way, if a negative story is brewing, you'll have a venue to encourage a more positive story.
Think about who a local reporter is mostly likely to call. Chances are, it's a person with whom the reporter already has contact, such as a public relations or marketing staff member. Before an event unfolds in the press, let this person into the loop, so he or she will know what to expect.
