Tip: Avoid OSHA citations

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, August 14, 2007

Hospitals trip up on many OSHA standards because they inadequately train employees on safe work practices, said Nanette Moss, CIH, MS, director of environmental health and safety compliance at consulting firm EH&E in Newton, MA.

Perform risk assessments to uncover hazards, and then educate employees about how to work safely with those identified risks. This is a similar approach to The Joint Commission's under EC.1.10 (managing safety risks). "Regular employee training is essential to avoid OSHA citations," she said. "Remember, this is not just for new employees, but whenever a new hazard is introduced or a new operation or process [arises] that presents some sort of hazard."
