CMS announced this week the new "HINN 12 - Noncovered Continued Stay" notice for providing advanced beneficial notice to inpatients when their continued stay will no longer be covered by Medicare. This form was previously referred to by CMS as the "inpatient ABN" form. Interestingly, CMS did not announce instructions on the use or completion of the new "inpatient ABN." The form was discussed in the May 29th Special Open Door Forum on Hospital Discharge Appeal Rights and providers may wish to listen to that call for information on the advanced beneficiary notice requirements for inpatients. The link to the new ABN form is listed in the "Other CMS Development" section of this update and the link to the page with listening instructions for the Open Door Forum is here.
