Provena Covenant Medical Center, based in Mokena, IL, won a victory last week in its prolonged battle to win back its state property-tax exemption.

The health network lost its exemption five years ago, when a local county ruled Provena's billing and collection practices weren't appropriate for a charitable hospital. Since losing the exemption, the non-profit has been forced to pay out $6 million it wouldn't have otherwise.

Now, however, a circuit court judge has sided with Provena. If the decision stands, not only would Provena regain its property-tax exemption, the state would be forced to repay the $6 million it collected since Provena originally lost the exemption.
