If you've attended a healthcare compliance conference within the past year, chances are you've heard the phrase "conflicts of interest" being thrown around as frequently as "free T-shirts." Acting on the heightened awareness of conflicts of interests within medical facilities, one hospital system in the Midwest tackled that problem head-on earlier this year when it implemented a new policy for managing vendors. The Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) in Detroit began a new policy on January 1 that requires vendors to complete a three-hour certification class, pay $100, and refrain from offering perks, such as luncheons and pens with logos to doctors, nurses, and staff members, when they make hospital visits. Vendors are also now required to schedule appointments instead of making unannounced visits. Although HFHS made headlines across the country because of its bold stance, one of the policy's implementers said it was simply a solution to some problems staff members were experiencing first-hand.
