A new measure under consideration in the Ohio legislature would force all of the state's hospitals to operate emergency departments that are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Cincinatti Business Courier reports.
The rule would apply to freestanding surgery centers and other hospital competitors that don't offer a full range of acute care services.
Although the Ohio Hospital Association strongly backs the bill, some emergency physicians oppose it. These physicians argue that forcing all hospitals to run an ED might result in inferior emergency care for some patients.
