Although CMS is moving toward a severity-adjusted diagnosis-related group (DRG) system for fiscal year 2008, the agency has yet to determine what system it will adopt for the plan. "The ultimate structure is becoming more clear, but the final specifications have not been laid out in detail, so you're dealing with a moving target and a conceptual reimbursement model," says Shane Wolverton, principal of The Delta Group, Inc., in Greenville, SC, a company that helps hospitals analyze their data from a severity perspective.
