Most providers will not be ready for the May 23 national provider identifier (NPI) compliance date, according to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) and the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI), both advisors to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on health information exchange. Whereas NCVHS is calling for a six-month contingency period from the May compliance date (or the time CMS releases its NPI dissemination notice, if it does so after May 23), WEDI is asking for a 12-month extension period from those same dates.
