The moment President George W. Bush nominated Kerry Weems, current HHS deputy chief of staff, to fill the vacant position of CMS administrator, a lot of weight was put on Weems' shoulders, according to The Hill.
If Congress accepts Bush's nomination, Weems will be responsible for overseeing the budget and staff of a massive agency, meaning he'll have to "pick up the ball on the administration's agenda for Medicare and Medicaid, which already has been on course for six years," the newspaper reports.
Hospitals, physicians, nursing homes, pharmaceutical companies and medical-device manufacturers all depend to a large extent on Medicare, Medicaid and CMS's nearly $600 billion annual budget for their livelihoods.
