Follow these twelve steps to create an effective compliance structure that starts with your CEO

Although auditors and compliance officers may be the "go-to" people for compliance issues, there is always someone above them to answer to-the CEO. Although you may be the head audit or compliance representative at your facility, your CEO is responsible for the facility in its entirety. Because of this, it's his or her responsibility to be up to speed on how to enforce and enhance compliance within the organization.

The following are 12 steps CEOs can take to set the tone at the top by letting all employees know that they support initiatives to keep the organization compliant with government regulations and authorities:

1. Audit for criminal conduct. Your facility's auditors can learn more about the activities going on within your buildings by using more than just a simple checklist, said Joe Murphy, a partner at Compliance Systems Legal Group in Warwick, RI, during April's Health Care Compliance Association Compliance Institute in Chicago.
