There is a correlative effect between hospitals' compliance departments and the accuracy of the hospitals' claims submitted to CMS, according to Kim Brandt of CMS' program integrity group.

The agency is preparing to release its full report written after conducting a three-year compliance program effectiveness pilot.

Brandt announced the study's initial findings at the 2007 Compliance Institute hosted by the Health Care Compliance Association.

Sixteen hospitals worked closely with CMS throughout the course of the study. During this time, CMS gathered data on the hospitals by conducting site visits, interviews, surveys, assessment reports and through other similar methods.

Brandt said CMS will issue the final version of the report in June, which will include qualitative, quantitative, and cost aspects of compliance effectiveness.
