New requirement implemented for ventricular assist devices
On April 13, CMS issued a transmittal revising the Medicare National Coverage Determination for ventricular assist devices. Effective March 27, 2007, hospitals that wish to maintain or become Medicare-approved facilities to furnish ventricular assist devices as destination therapy must meet new criteria, including being credentialed by the Joint Commission under the Disease Specific Certification Program for Ventricular Assist Devices.
Effective Date: March 27, 2007
Implementation Date: May 14, 2007

Billing technical component pathology services
On April 18, CMS issued a transmittal operationalizing the statutory extension of the "grandfathering" provisions relating to the billing of technical component pathology services furnished to hospital inpatients and outpatients. The statutory extensions permit certain hospitals to continue through December 31, 2007 an arrangement with an independent laboratory under which the independent laboratory bills Medicare directly for technical component pathology services furnished to the hospital's Medicare patients.
Effective Date: April 1, 2007
Implementation Date: April 2, 2007
