Government Audit Insider: Nursing home may give employees "rewards" from company

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, April 11, 2007

A nursing home may pass on "rewards" from its company credit cards to employees, according to a recent OIG advisory opinion.

"Based on the facts certified in your request . we conclude that the Proposed Arrangement would not generate prohibited remuneration under the anti-kickback statute," according to the advisory opinion.

The rewards, such as airline mileage, cash rebates, and purchase points toward certain items, would work as performance incentives, according to the nursing home. The nursing home would initially use the credit cards to purchase Medicare- and Medicaid-reimbursable goods and services, according to the advisory opinion.

The advisory opinion warned the nursing home to use caution when reporting reimbursements on its yearly cost reports.
