Government Audit Insider: OIG releases new advisory opinion

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, March 20, 2007

The OIG focused its most recent advisory opinion on whether hospitals could subsidize the cost of ambulance transportation for patients transported to a facility from outside the facility's local area.

The hospital that requested the advisory opinion is an acute care facility that is a recognized leader in cardiovascular services, according to the OIG document.

The OIG concluded that this practice could potentially generate prohibited remuneration under the anti-kickback statute, and the hospital could be sanctioned by the OIG.
