CMS proposes to substantially revise advanced beneficiary notification forms CMS published in the February 23 Federal Register a request for comments on its proposal to revise the advanced beneficiary notification (ABN) forms CMS-R-131-G and CMS-R-131-L. The Federal Register notice provides instructions on the process for submitting comments.

According to Hugh Aaron, senior vice president for compliance and regulatory affairs with HCPro, if the new forms are implemented as proposed, they will have a substantial operational impact on the provision of hospital outpatient services. For example, unlike the current form, the new form will make it mandatory that hospitals provide Medicare beneficiaries with a cost estimate.
