Air ambulance service improperly billed Medicare
Healthcare Auditing Weekly, March 6, 2007
The Lubbock, TX-based Covenant Health System improperly billed Medicare for air ambulance services during 2002, which resulted in more than $15,000 in overpayments that were made to the health system that year, according to an OIG audit.
Specifically, Covenant wrongly billed for air transportation that was not documented as medically necessary and appropriate, inaccurate mileage, and rotary wing transport when a fixed wing transport was provided.
The OIG asked Covenant to reimburse Medicare for the overpayments it received. Covenant disagreed with two of the OIG's findings, including reimbursing Medicare.
