State regulators to audit mental health treatment

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, February 13, 2007

The state of North Carolina will audit companies that provide basic assistance to mental health and substance abuse patients whom regulators believe should instead receive more intensive treatments, the Charlotte Observer reports.

HHS announced last week it would review the new type of treatment, called "community support," by examining patient records to see whether providers are offering the right kind of care.

In community support, private companies and nonprofit agencies determine the needs of the mentally ill or substance abusers and then give some basic aid such as helping clients work on social skills. Last year, federal Medicaid officials agreed to pay for community support, which was designed last year by the state.

An early review of the program leads regulators to believe community support is being used inappropriately. Company requests for community support payments increased from about 23 hours for each person in July to about 31 hours per person in December.
