USC attempts to rectify transplant program problems

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, January 16, 2007

The University of Southern California's University Hospital will change the way it selects its liver transplant patients, according to the LA Times.

USC's announcement comes on the heels of an earlier report, which showed the hospital's liver program continues to have one of the worst survival rates in the country.

National transplant statistics show more than 77% of USC's liver transplant patients were still alive one year after surgery.

The study said USC should've had a survival rate of more than 83% based on the condition of its patients and organs the hospital worked with.

Hospital officials say in a statement they're "acutely aware" of the program's low rating in the report, and are working to correct the factors that earned the hospital that score.
