Know the difference between bundling and packaging to ensure compliance
When it comes to "packaging" and "bundling" services, coders within your organization may be confused about when to use one and not the other.
In fact, there has been so much confusion that the OIG will review cases where facilities unbundled their outpatient services as part of its 2007 Work Plan.
Contrary to popular belief, bundling and packaging are not terms that staff should use interchangeably. Because coders often inadvertently do, your hospital may miss billing for services that should be rightfully reported.
