UnitedHealthcare, a unit of UnitedHealth Group, will pay $45,000 in fines and costs to the state of New York for providing misleading information to its customers, the The Journal News reports.

The case arose from a complaint by a consumer who received care from a doctor listed in the insurer's Empire Plan network, but was charged out-of-network rates.

As a result, the patient paid more out of pocket than she might have had her claim been processed "in network."

A state investigation determined that UnitedHealth erroneously listed some doctors in its directories as participating in the Empire Plan at certain locations.
