Hospital fails to maintain controlled substance standards
Healthcare Auditing Weekly, January 2, 2007
Lawton Indian Hospital in Lawton, OK has not complied with requirements to secure and account for its schedule II controlled substances, a recent OIG audit found.
Schedule II substances are certain addictive drugs whose uses are regulated under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970.
Lawton did not appropriately secure or have adequate internal controls over these substances, nor did it appropriately account for all of its schedule II substances, according to the OIG's findings.
The OIG recommends that the hospital ensure that the disposal of wasted substances is appropriately documented, submit monthly substance inventory reports, and perform random checks of substance inventories.
