The state of Tennessee will begin to receive disproportionate share hospital (DSH) payments for 2007 after years of not receiving them, The Tennessean reports.
The state gave up DSH funds more than a decade ago when it expanded its Medicaid program, TennCare. But recently the state cut back on the program and has been lobbying to get those funds back ever since.
For 2007, the state will receive $131 million, which will be dispersed between hospitals that treat a high number of uninsured and poor patients.
Eventually, the state's hospitals could receive $430 million per year if payments are restored in full.
