How to keep your organization from landing in hot water

Fraud lawsuits involving major players in the healthcare industry (e.g., UnitedHealth, HealthSouth, and Tenet) are consistently grabbing more headline space in the nation's newspapers.

As a member of your facility's compliance or audit staff, your job is to help prevent these situations from happening. But the question is, do you know how?

For example, the following large settlements occurred within the past six months:

  • Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Inc.-owned by Tenet-announced in November that it will pay the federal government $900,000 to settle allegations that it knowingly caused Medicare to make overpayments for services rendered at the company's outpatient cancer center in Palm Springs, CA.
