State University of New York hospitals may be privatized to save the state money, if New York lawmakers accept certain recommendations of a state commission, according to the Associated Press (AP).

The state Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century recommended Medicaid cost-saving measures that include possibly privatizing the state university hospitals in Syracuse, Stony Brook and Brooklyn, as well as county nursing homes.

Commission members are not saying whether they have decided on specific hospital and wing closures. The commission plans a formal announcement on closures next week, according to the AP.
