Audit: Missouri improperly claimed $1.1 million

Healthcare Auditing Weekly, November 21, 2006

Missouri's Division of Medical Services followed the wrong procedure when it claimed $3.5 million worth of payments for skilled professional medical personnel at the school district level, the OIG reports.

The OIG said the payments, made during fiscal year 2003, were for unallowable activities by the school districts, inaccurate administrative claiming invoices, and inaccurate personnel rosters.

The OIG recommended the division refund the government $1.1 million and strengthen policies and procedures to more closely monitor claiming programs and payments. The office also recommended that the division review all of the school districts' 2003 claiming program cost pools and invoices to ensure accuracy and remit any overpayments to the government.

The division disagreed with the majority of the OIG's recommendations.
