GME: Final rule changes policy on didactic time

A final rule passed down from CMS may change the way hospitals are reimbursed for graduate medical education (GME).

As of October 1, the agency has instituted a one work day threshold for hospitals to document didactic activities.

To the extent that didactic activities (e.g., conferences or journal clubs) are not scheduled for an entire work day, a hospital can record the entire day as having been spent in patient care activities, and claim direct and indirect medical education (DME/IME) reimbursement for that time.
