NPI implementation: Take a two-phase approach

Many organizations are preparing to transition from the existing legacy numbers to national provider identifiers (NPI).
The best approach to transition to NPIs is to use an interim strategy for the transition period and develop a long-term plan for the years to come.
The May 23, 2007, deadline is quickly approaching, so organizations should begin their efforts now. Compliance and audit professionals should be aware of their organization's plan to transition to NPIs to ensure compliance.
The following is a recommended process for a two-phase approach to implementation.
