Let's face it: When employees see compliance officers and auditors coming, they're not always excited to discuss the details of what happens in their departments.

That's a concept that Stephen A. Morreale, DPA, CHC, a former OIG Assistant Special Agent in Charge and current consultant for Compliance & Risk Dynamics in Boston, understands all too well.

"What do they think of you as compliance officers at your shop?" he asked the audience during the Health Care Compliance Associ-ation's New England Local Conference in September. "You're the cop, right? It's a very lonely place to be, because you have one foot in the executive side to deal with issues and represent the organization, but you also have a responsibility outside with the regulators. That's a very difficult position to be in."
